The Clan Chief

James B. Macpherson of Cluny

James Brodie Macpherson of Cluny, known as Jamie, is the 28th hereditary Chief of Clan Macpherson. Clan tradition often refers to the Chief simply as “Cluny”.

He succeeded his late father, Sir William Macpherson of Cluny and Blairgowrie, in February 2021.

Born on 5 June 1972, Jamie was educated at Summer Fields in Oxford, Fettes College in Edinburgh, and Guilford College in North Carolina, where he earned a degree in Sports Management and Business.

In 2002 he married Annie Alexandra Macpherson, and together they have three children. Although the Chiefs have held Newton Castle in Blairgowrie since 1787, the family now lives in Melrose in the Scottish Borders.

After early work with Whitbread plc in London, Jamie became Commercial Manager at Ben Sayers Golf Company. He later founded his own property business, Macpherson Property, in Melrose. Passionate about all things Scottish, he is a keen sportsman and enjoys golf, rugby, fishing, and the outdoors.

The Chief’s Role Today

The Court of the Lord Lyon recognises the Chief as head of the Clan and sole bearer of the undifferenced Arms of the Macphersons. This title carries honour and dignity, and remains a powerful symbol of identity, kinship, and continuity for Macphersons worldwide.

Jamie serves as President of the Clan Macpherson Association. He plays a leading role at the annual Clan Macpherson Gathering in Newtonmore and maintains a close connection with the Museum.
